Date for workshops and birds-of-a-feather sessions: Thursday, August 14, 2008

Objective: Present and discuss relevant topics of interest to the MIS community

Structure: Half day (8 AM -12 PM or 1 PM - 5 PM) or full day (8 AM – 5 PM)

Application Form - Birds-of-a-Feather Session Proposal

We invite proposals for workshops/birds-of-a-feather sessions under the following three categories:

(i) Academic Workshops – Workshops that discuss ways to advance research or teaching in MIS including methodologies related to research or teaching (e.g., discuss new course offerings, research trends, advanced methodologies).

Examples of topics:

  • Reviewing for MIS Journals
  • Grant Writing in Information Systems Research
  • Theory Building in MIS Research
  • Developing MIS Papers for Practitioner Audiences
  • PLS versus LISREL: Which is More Appropriate?
  • Active Learning in the University Classroom
  • Using Tablet PCs to Enhance Classroom Teaching and Learning
  • Bringing Real-World Issues into MIS Classrooms: A Multi-media Case Study Approach

(ii) Business Workshops – Workshops that bring relevant concepts and/or products from industry into academia/curriculum (e.g., curricular implications, introduce new products or services).

Examples of topics:

  • ASP.NET and Web Services: Introducing the Service Oriented Architecture into MIS Curriculum
  • Ubiquitous Commerce (e.g., RFID): Applications and Challenges
  • Web 2.0: Overview, Principles, Constituents, and Business Models
  • Logical Partitioning and Strategy for Server Virtualization
  • Designing and Teaching Information Security in the MIS curriculum

(iii) Birds-of-a-Feather Sessions – Informal meet-up where the attendees group together based on a shared research or teaching interest and participate in discussions without any pre-planned agenda.

Examples of topics:

  • Knowledge Management
  • Ubiquitous Computing and Applications
  • Privacy and Security in Healthcare
  • Open Source Software Development
  • IT Outsourcing and Trends
  • Teaching in a Distributed Setting: Challenges and Solutions
  • Teaching Programming in the MIS Curriculum
